Harry – Wire Fox Terrier – Rehomed

We were approached by a volunteer in Romania – a fox terrier had been wandering the streets of a town for a month.  He had burns all across his body from a weed that irritates the skin – but this is where he had to live – in the field – as every person he turned to for help sent him away – sometimes through violence.  He was lost and hurt and we ere asked to help.  During his time on the street he found a little dog and the two became friends and inseparable.  So when we were asked if we could help him – we had to take her as well.  No one gets left behind.

We decided to call them Harry and Sally.  We will start with Harry’s story.  Harry is a young dog 2/3 years old – a fox terrier abandoned and fighting to stay alive in a rural town in Romania.  He was collected by a volunteer, Brought to the Vet – his skin was the immediate concern and treatment began that day.  In time he was vaccinated, neutered, groomed, and then brought to a kennel.  He stayed there until he could travel to the UK.  We were told he is shy (understandable) , fine with other dogs and desperate for human contact.

He was brought to the UK, and we slowly worked on getting to know him.  He is shy but sweet.  Very gentle in many ways – we aren’t sure if he ever lived in doors – he watches the TV, seems not bothered by general noises (washing machine/dryer, kettle and so on).

What he does have is ‘sleep startle’ -this isn’t uncommon for dogs that have been abused.  When they are asleep – they have been threatened by people and this trauma means they can show teeth/growl when they are going into a deep sleep and get disturbed.  This can be managed – and we work with any adoptive family to learns ways to help him.  In our experience, when trust builds – this behaviour lessens.  But we must respect the trauma they have suffered and give them the time to process.

He is looking for a home that will give him that gentle introduction to life.

Nelson – Wire Fox Terrier – Rehomed

Update 8 August 2024

Nelson is such a cute boy – we had a trip to the home of one of our volunteers – this is to assess what he can and cannot cope with in a home environment – he did cope really well – he seems to have some knowledge of home sounds – and was not put off by washing machines or the regular hub bub noises of a home. – he is still sensitive to some sounds but we feel that with a slow introduction to family life he would be able to cope.

He loves people and wants to be with you – but he has suffered at the hands of people – so he is a little shy and can be nervous of new and unusual sounds and situations – he will dart away – he always wants to come back for more cuddles but it is at his pace. As an example – my keys jangled and this made him jump – he did come back for head rubs – but I needed to give him patience and space – he will need support and reassurance

Nelson also loves his toys and sniffaris!  He does get excited though and can become a bit jumpy – so that will need to be managed – but he is very biddable and we feel he is ready for his new home (provided they meet his needs) – he cannot live with small furries and young children – but he is ready for his new home!

His background:

This boy was advertised on social media as a dog that had been sold with a house and the new owners wanted him gone.  One of our wonderful volunteers in Spain arranged his collection and the true story came out …. This dog was bought as a puppy – they had him in the garden and one day the owner found him chasing the chickens – so the owner grabbed him and the dog, being startled, turned round and bit him.  The owner then decided he was ‘aggressive’ and his children were at risk and basically wanted the dog gone.  If it wasnt rescue – the dog would have been put to sleep.

So we stepped in and he is now in kennels in Spain.  He is a very stressed dog and we suspect from his behaviour he has suffered a lot of physical abuse in his short life.

What we know: he is young 1-2 years old, he is very nervous of new people, he is reacting to dogs in kennels and he is capable of jumping 6 foot fences.  We are hoping he will settle in kennels and would desperately like to find him a foster/adoptive home in the UK

He will need a home with garden (and secure fencing!), no other animals including dogs, time to help him transition to life as a loved pet.  YOu will have support from us and our behaviourist – but you will need to understand that he will need TIME and PATIENCE.  We have no doubt he will become a wonderful companion, but he will need time to get there

Priority will be given to homes in the South East of England as we have a good support base there.

If you are interested please send a Rehoming Questionnaire.

Dexter – Wire Fox Terrier – Rehomed

This boy is with another rescue in Romania – we will move him to the UK when we find a suitable home- adoptive or foster

He was found wandering the streets in terrible condition – after 3 days of being ignored/ abused – the rescue found him and brought him to the kennels.   He Hada. Much needed groom and is in the process of getting ready for transport.

What we are told:  he is 1-2 years old, good with dogs and people – a little shy and needs a calm home to slowly adjust to everything

If you feel you are suitable please complete a Rehoming Questionnaire and contact us

Hetty – Welsh Terrier – Rehomed

Update – sadly HEtty has been returned to rescue – she was exhibiting many behaviours that were not expected and we felt it would be best she returns to rescue and she can be assessed and given some help and guidance.  We will do updates

Please say Hello to Hetty! Her family have had a job placement overseas – and they initially wanted her to join them – but they feel the long journey and the tropical location would not suit her and have made the difficult decision to find a new home for her. She is in foster in Crewe and is safe – so we are looking for the right home for her

Hetty is a lovely girl. She is 6 years old , Travels well in the car, fully vaccinated (has EU passport) and has no known health problems. She has a normal routine with her family – walks in the morning – can be left for short periods, she has the run of the house and is no problem. She has an evening walk then will go onto her chair and watch TV with her humans.

She loves her games and toys – and will de-stuff any soft toy in 5 seconds flat. She s a typical terrier and will bark when someone comes to the door or if she needs to tell the birds off – but once she has said what she needs to say she settles.

She is friendly with most dogs – can be selective (which is perfectly normal for a Welshie!) Cannot be left off lead as her recall is also selective

So a super all round Welsh Terrier – but she does have one vice – she will guard her bed at night. She doesn’t bite and has never bitten – but at night she will not tolerate any passers by – once she is in bed she must be left alone. She is used to sleeping downstairs – we have a plan in place to support any prospective family and you must follow our guidance. But this also means she cannot live with children – she does live with a dog and could live with a relaxed dog.

If you feel you are suitable, please complete a Homing Questionnaire – thank you

Gryff – Welsh Terrier – Sanctuary

Update 2025

Sadly Gryff has found the move to a home environment very difficult and despite all our best efforts he was not able to settle.  We will be doing a new description for him and his needs – but at the moment he has gone back to his routine and what he is comfortable with.  We do not stop trying to find a home for a dog – but sometimes they needs are very specific and it will take more time.  Gryff really needs an older person, living on their own and that is happy for daily walks and pottering in the garden – Gryff is very much a one person kind of boy.  He does suffer with separation anxiety and will howl – so that would need to be considered – so neighbours may not appreciate being serenaded – it is not what we hoped for Gryff but we will stand by him and keep trying – he is worth it.

In the interim if you would like to help with his monthly costs please consider donating – we would appreciate it and Gryff says Thank you x

Update – January 2024

Sadly Gryff has returned to rescue.  He was adopted and much loved.  He was a wonderful companion but sadly his owner had a life altering condition and was no longer able to properly care for him.  He has returned to rescue as we give life time back up for all our dogs.  You can see his write up from before below.  We do know he is a lovely dog – he walked well on lead, travelled well in car, could be left – a well behaved chap and really just needs the right home.  He stills needs to be an only dog in the home (he is fine with other dogs and has friends outside) – he is a cuddly dog and just enjoys life.  His condition is much better managed and we have got the medication level working for him.  He does like to dig – typical terrier – so that needs to be understood and you must like help digging holes in your garden or furniture!  he can be easily diverted – and put his energies into something more acceptable.

If you feel you are the right home for Gryff please let us know.

Previous details ….

Please say Hello to our new Terrier SOS family member- this is the lovely Gryff

Gryff came to us as his family’s circumstances have changed – and this was proving to be too much for him to adapt and adjust to.  His family care for him very much – but realised they could no longer offer Gryff the calm environment that he desperately needs.  This has not been an easy decision for them- and we at rescue felt for them – but agreed that he needed a different home environment.

Gryff is a lovely Welsh Terrier – he is 5 years old, fully vaccinated and with full vet history.  Gryff originates from the UK and we have his full history.  He is now in kennels in Norfolk and is adjusting very well.

Gryff has been diagnosed with epilepsy and is on medication for this.  He manages well, loves his food and treats and chews.  He is a very affable chap.  On walks, he can be reactive on lead to other dogs.  He has lived with dogs, but he would cope much better as an only dog and having humans to himself and he will only be rehomed to a dog free house.

He enjoys his walks, he enjoys people company, he travels well in the car, He has been clipped on a regular basis (he can be sensitive over his feet and face – so any prospective groomer would need to be patient and kind).

He loves being with his family, will follow you round, get involved in your activities and also help landscape your garden.  He can be left for short periods – but fundamentally would like someone around most of the time.

Gryff has developed a few ‘quirks’ – some very typical of the Welsh Terrier breed and some not.  HOwever, we will discuss further with any suitable applicant.  Any family would need to visit him in NOrfolk at least a couple of times prior to adoption.

He cannot live with cats, small furries or young children.

If you feel you can provide him the loving home he deserves – please complete a Homing Questionnaire – thank you
